Dog safety training and awareness is everywhere – and so it
should be! Pet loss prevention includes using all means possible
to protect them from unknown harm and protect the public from being
approached by unknown dogs. And that means that safety-conscious
owners are drawing on a growing number of strategies, products,
information and dog training to help minimize pet loss and injury.
The range of pet safety tools available is booming - everything
from dog safety lights to electronic dog training collars, pet life
preservers, pet loss-prevention devices like Dog e Alert™!,
dog first aid, pet fashion… and the list goes on. An ounce
of prevention goes a long way to keeping your dog away from animal
rescue and safely with his owner where he is happy!
Be Smart about Dog
Safety and Loss-Prevention
Training, training, training!
Dog training is one of the most important gifts you can ever give
yourself and your dog. A trained dog is more calm, focused, obedient,
fulfilled, healthy and happy. Just like people, dogs need exercise
and a job to feel satisfaction, pride and to earn praise. Professional
dog training carefully chosen to fit your breed and learning style
will lead to consistent obedience. And that goes a long way to keeping
him safe from the many dangers that only humans can properly assess.
Good training can also help overcome challenges like separation
anxiety, housebreaking difficulties, excessive chewing, shyness
or aggression.
Be seen and be safe!
There are a number of important reasons for owners to use flashing
LED cat or dog safety lights. Simply put, they are more effective
than any other battery collar, safety or reflective device. Ensure
you have at least one lighted dog collar, leash or harness with
flashing LED lights built in so they can’t break off. Pet
safety is critical at night when the risk of loss or injury is much
higher, and high-intensity LEDs can easily be seen up to 300 meters
away! Dogs and cats will always need to go out at night, and even
dogs on leash can bolt a few feet too close to the road. Choose
a lighted dog collar with an added reflective strip, and your pet
gets a real boost in daytime too! Give cars a clue that you and
your dog are there!
Proactive Pet Loss-Prevention with Dog e Alert™!
Consider electronic pet loss-prevention devices like Dog e Alert™!
when allowing your pet to roam in nearby parks, large open spaces
or in the woods. This added level of security can mean the difference
between finding your pet quickly or searching for hours! This is
especially important for hounds, hunting dogs and any dog allowed
loose at a cottage, country home or near a busy road. Adjustable
from 2 to 25 meters (up to 75 feet), Dog e Alert™! alerts
you right away when your dog is starting to stray, allowing you
to refocus and catch him NOW – not hours after the fact when
he is lost!!!
Dog car safety restraints are a good idea for local travel but a
must for highway travel! With them, Fido must stay calm and not
distract you when you are driving. Without them, Fido can be crushed
in the event of an accident. It’s a no-brainer.
Beware of sudden temperature changes when leaving your pet for short
periods in a parked vehicle. Some climates experience sudden spikes
of heat and humidity, for example in southern areas right after
rainfall, putting your pet at risk of dehydration, breathing difficulties
and heat stroke. Always leave windows cracked open and never leave
a pet for more than a few minutes without supervision.
Finding His Way Home
Ensure your pet is properly identified at all times with required
license tags and vaccination tags. The more information the better.
Pet loss-prevention includes a safety net for when the plan fails.
Many tags provide a website where the tag number can easily be cross-referenced
to the dog’s veterinarian file and owner. Insist on it!
Dog Fashion - Woof!
Woof! Be seen and be safe! Don’t be afraid to dress up your
pooch. Fashionable doggies (*link to Dog e Stars page) get lots
of attention…and love the attention! .... that translates
into lower risk of your pet wandering off undetected to get into
trouble or worse.
Dog Emergency and First Aid
Learning basic dog first aid is a very good idea although we hope
you will never need to use it! Your local SPCA, shelter or similar
organization will sometimes offer excellent pet first aid courses
detailing the knowledge, supplies and skills to calmly and effectively
diffuse a crisis and respond to a canine emergency. You can also
learn about common but serious medical conditions, like epileptic
or narcoleptic dog, and recognize the warning signals that can save
your pet’s life. Alternatively, there are several very good
websites describing basic first aid techniques that you can review
and bookmark for easy reference should you ever need them. A canine
first aid kit kept with your human one is a smart precaution.
A Safe Home
Especially for a puppy, dog-proof your home like you would for a
child. Eyes in the back of your head aside, it can literally take
just a split second for your pooch to find exactly what you don't
want him to. Keep toxic substances, poisons, safety hazards and
valuables well out of reach. Child safety and pet safety can be
addressed at the same time.
On Vacation
Consider pet life preservers, floatation devices or vests for the
lake or ocean, even if your dog is a swimmer, and if you plan to
take him on a boat. Don't forget your favourite electronic loss-prevention
device, especially if camping or exploring. Beware of tying up a
dog near trees or low-lying branches on which he could inadvertently
get caught while jumping. The result could be deadly. Never, ever,
tie up a dog using a choke chain collar.
Especially
for the Hunting or Scent-Tracking Dog
It is critical to equip your hunting or scent-tracking dog with
some sort of highly visible attire so that he is not mistaken for
wildlife. The same goes for any dog that is allowed loose near a
hunting area. Add to that an electronic loss-prevention device,
and you're ready to roll! Whether using a flashing LED dog safety
collar or a bright reflective safety vest, be seen and be safe!
